4 Basic Features of a Biophilic Design

Biophilic design brings people closer to nature via the design and decor of buildings and environments. These designs harness natural resources to develop a feeling of balance between contemporary architecture and the natural environment. The term Biophilic designs encompass a variety of natural features that collaborate to deliver perfect harmony. Here, we will cover 4 of the most basic elements of a Biophilic design.

1. Fresh Air:

Infrastructure at our homes and workplaces should provide ample fresh air and sunlight, with the option to open windows and allow a fresh breeze in whenever necessary. We should also hear the rainfall, winds, or birds chirping through an open window, connecting us to the weather and environment. It’s a basic concept, yet many individuals live in houses where the windows don’t open or are never opened. Biophilic designs are all about fresh air and open windows.

2. Sunlight and shadows:

There is emerging evidence that we are happier when our circadian cycles are in harmony since receiving adequate daylight helps with this. We instinctively track the time of day by watching shadows and sunshine move throughout a room, and we naturally gravitate toward sunny, warm locations. This balance of light and shadow is encouraged in Biophilic architecture. Outdoor spaces may be constructed even in the smallest of places, whether it’s a modest backyard, terrace, or porch. For the summer months , these places can be used as work areas or living rooms for warmth and illumination.

3. Natural forms and shapes:

Straight lines and sharp angles now rule the majority of our concrete structures. Even though we have a genuine affection for the curving forms and patterns found in tides, flowers, and seashells, constructing these shapes and their perception of order, intricacy, and elegance is costly. Although not every property can incorporate natural shapes into the structure, designs from nature can be employed as ornamental themes and can help us bond to the natural environment. Biophilic designs allow us to introduce these shapes in our everyday environment conveniently through a variety of ways.

4. Water element:

Our bodies are physically evolved to respond to water, particularly moving water, with some Biophilic circles believing that when we hear water, our bodies’ internal rhythm moves to meet it. Most biophilic designs incorporate the water element in the form of waterfalls, fountains, or water walls to give you a sense of serenity and peace.

Conclusion:

There has been a lot of research showing that having nature in our homes and offices makes us feel better. We must all acknowledge that modern living is stressful and difficult, with most of us investing far too much time cooped up indoors. Biophilic Design encourages us to reconnect with surrounding nature, which, in turn, improves our health and wellbeing.
